Course Sampler
Math classes at COCC provide comprehensive learning in analytic and quantitative skills, from elementary to advanced course levels
Math is alive in so much of everyday life — essential to things like DIY projects, home finances, technology developments, health care, weather modeling and an increasingly data-driven world. How do you use the universal language of math? At COCC, coursework opens a broad range of study, whether that's fundamental problem-solving or in-depth analytics.
The following course group provides an example of what students can discover in Mathematics at COCC:
Introduction to Data Science presents essential concepts in this fast-growing field, emphasizing the critical thinking and analytical skills required to work with data. Students develop the ability to tell a story from real-world datasets.
Exploring mathematics in the context of "math you encounter in your daily life," Math Literacy studies pattern recognition, estimation and basic equations. Students learn how to clearly communicate arguments supported by quantitative evidence such as tables, graphs and equations.
Fundamentals of Elementary Mathematics introduces problem-solving, sets, number theory and fractions. This is the first term of a sequence for students planning to become elementary teachers, but it's open to any students wanting to study the foundations of mathematics.
Applicable to things such as predicting population growth or translating chemical reactions, Applied Differential Equations covers differential equations for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students. Introduces the application of first- and second-order linear and nonlinear equations, systems of linear first-order differential equations, and applications appropriate for science and engineering.
Calculus for Management/Social Science opens an understanding of differential and integral calculus for students majoring in management and social science. Uses graphing technology, teaches polynomial, logarithmic and exponential functions and their applications to business and social sciences.
