Hujambo, or Hello!

As the Afrocentric Program Coordinator here at Central Oregon Community College. I've been able to develop a system of community through student engagement and human development. Originally from North Carolina, I started my career in the US Navy. In my 8 years of service, I have worked concurrently to receive my BA in Marketing at the University of Washington-Seattle campus.

After college, I started honing my skills developing technology solutions in Southern California with IBM. After a few years of success, I accepted a position as a Regional Manager in Business Development for American Honda Motors. Through my work, I was able to volunteer in several educational programs in challenging communities, helping them with social and emotional development.  Additionally, I was given the opportunity to mentor students at an architecture high school, coach middle and high school track, teach spoken word and leadership workshops, and provide support for families.

After Corporate America, I moved to Metro Philadelphia and rural Michigan, working on my master's in counseling and psycho-therapy, developing Alternative Education programs, counseling students with behavioral and academic issues, and career planning, while serving as a change agency. Drawn to the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the outdoors, I moved to Bend in 2015 with my family. I've been able to develop a 501 (c) (3), becoming Chair for the Bend-La Pine School Board, consulting elected officials, and business leaders on the importance of academic success, and am dedicated to educational equity.

I’m truly looking forward to serving as an advocate of the African diaspora and its teachings, which allow for collective work,  partnering with industry leaders, developing systemic improvements with educational allies, and creating a community committed to mutual respect and cultural humility. While at COCC, I hope to continue my role in the support and encouragement of students, continue the growth of the Afrocentric Club by building relationships in the community, and improve staff and faculty involvement in a culturally inclusive activities environment. You've learned a bit about me. Tell me about you! Reach out and let's start a conversation.
