In recognition of Black History Month during February 2026, COCC is honored to welcome speakers and programs that highlight Black triumph. We will celebrate the past and present triumphs of the Black community while continuing our efforts to challenge oppressive systems and strive toward a more equitable future.

Empowerment Retreat
"The Power of Student Voice"
Saturday, Feb. 7th, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Redmond Campus, RTEC Building.
This retreat celebrates the power of gathering, learning, and creating together, and the event is led by student voice, resilience, and the brilliance of our students and the surrounding community. Participants will explore three themes centered on creativity and resilience, wellness, and personal branding/business acumen. The day will conclude with a powerful community conversation on empowering Black Women, led by Shandell Landon, M.Ed., College of Health, OSU-Cascades.
Breakfast and Lunch are provided.

Film Screening: Toni Morrison, "The Pieces I Am"
"A Journey in the Life of Her Writing"
Tuesday, Feb. 10th, 6 - 8 p.m.
Bend Campus, Coats Campus Center, Wille Hall.
Join us for an intimate portrait of Toni Morrison, Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, editor, and cultural icon. The film traces her path from Lorain, OH, to the front line of activism alongside Angela Davis, while honoring the legacy she shared with other inspiring Black women, literary giants such as Audre Lorde, bell hooks, Gwendolyn Brooks, Maya Angelou, and Nikki Giovanni. Following the screen, stay for a rich conversation led by Stephanie Andre, Chair of Humanities and Professor of English Literature.

Community Forum
"Where Community and Culture Collide."
Wednesday, Feb. 18, Noon and 4:30 p.m.
Madras Campus, New Student Room.
These forums will help highlight the relationship between communities within Madras, Warm Springs, and others to help understand the importance of Black History and its many contributions that impact our lives. Join us as we explore a display of artifacts, books, and a brief presentation of Black History facts. Both sessions will include a drummaking activity for all to enjoy.

"Ubuntu: I Am Because We Are"

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Oregon (UUF)
Learn about the spirit of the middle passage and how it has impacted our lives in the past, and how it continues to impact our daily lives. Join us on a journey to reconnect through food, music, and culture! Experience the joy and pride that we have lost but have regained. Performances from local artists and food will be served at this event.

Join us for an inspiring evening honoring the strength, brilliance, and legacy of Black women. As we celebrate Black History Month, we uplift the stories that shaped us, acknowledge the resilience that guides us, and honor the power that continues to move our communities forward. Curated and emceed by Afrocentric students, enjoy food, culture, and connection at this vibrant gathering rooted in history, pride, and unity.
