Physics
Why study Physics?
Encompassing the methods, tools and frameworks that physicists use to better understand
the universe, the Physics program at COCC teaches core principles through interactive
learning. From exploring energy topics to Newton’s Laws to magnetic interactions and
forces, the focus is on problem solving and critical thinking. Teamwork is a constant
emphasis — to sharpen communication and collaborative skills — as students develop
projects, demos and designs together. Engineering is an interconnected discipline. The option of Astronomy classes (designed for non-science majors) opens up understandings of cosmological
concepts like supernovae, pulsars and black holes.
"My professor showed the power of how a simple calculation could help you predict physical action in endless real-world scenarios."
Austin Steimer, senior design engineer, Vermont SportsCarer Adaptation
Set in the College's state-of-the-art Science Center, students can access inspiring academic resources, including advanced lab equipment, glass-walled conference rooms, and cutting-edge educational research. Guest speakers and field trips to local firms and companies add real-world texture to the coursework.
Program-Specific Information
Students pursuing a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) career can choose from either an Associate of Science degree with an engineering emphasis or an Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer degree with a focus on physics. Recent data shows that 95% of COCC students have passed the industry-standard Fundamentals of Engineering exam through the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying — the national average is in the 60-70% range.
