Chemistry
Why study Chemistry?
Centered on discovery and analysis, Chemistry at COCC provides fundamental, modern learning about the structure, composition and transformation of matter. Hands-on and taught in small-class settings, Chemistry courses are offered across COCC’s four campuses, with expert, approachable instructors and several state-of-the-art lab facilities. Along with critical thinking, students develop collaborative skills and sustainability insights — STEM understandings that are connected to many other disciplines, from dental hygiene to engineering. Students of Chemistry come away with research practice, lab confidence, and a fuller awareness of chemistry’s impact on everyday life.
"The caliber of the faculty impressed me — the knowledge, the patience and the coaching skills. Their encouragement was critical to my confidence and willingness to ‘go for it’ and see what I was capable of."
COCC Chemistry coursework includes two full-year sequences in General Chemistry and supplemental mathematics courses, with specialty studies in things like Climate Change and Organic Chemistry. The Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer with a Chemistry emphasis is excellent preparation for bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and related disciplines, such as toxicology, atmospheric science, environmental science and materials science.
